In the challenging wet conditions last Friday and Saturday, our SA riders put up some great competition against Australia’s road racing finest, all under the lights for round 2 of the 2024 Mi-Bike Motorcycle Insurance Australian Superbike Championship, presented by Motul Australia at Sydney Motorsport Park. With a stack of top 10 finishes and even a podium, it’s safe to say our team showed outstanding resilience to bring about great results. Below is a breakdown of the weekend’s results; let’s take a quick look at just some of the weekend’s moments from our SA crew that shaped ASBK round 2 –
Making his Alpinestars Superbike Debut for 2024, Ty Lynch got to work getting his head around the new machinery. Starting with race 1 in 17th place, he improved his results further, finishing 15th and 13th in his second and third races, respectively. We’re predicting some top 10 results in the not-too-distant future for him.
Continuing his 2024 Superbike journey, Michael Kemp added his name to the list of unforeseen events during the weekend when, during the sighting lap of race 2, he shot off the track at turn 2 in the dark with no brakes at full speed. With a silver lining to the horrible situation, both he and the bike came out of the incident unscathed. In an unforeseen twist, the race start was red-flagged due to the track conditions and the weather, giving Michael the perfect window to switch bikes and join back in the action on the restart. In the end, he improved from his race 1 19th place finish to take 17th in race 2.
Olly Simpson had a challenging start to his weekend with an unfortunate crash in his opening SS600 race, but showing absolute determination and resilience, he turned that around and came back with a 7th place finish for race 2, maintaining his 4th place Championship spot.
Joining the top 10 contenders to avoid the SS300 class mishaps, Mitch Simpson started with a 5th place finish in race 1, then backed it up by jumping onto the 3rd place step of the podium for race 2, rounding out the weekend with an 8th place finish in race 3 – a pretty solid outing!
Jordy Simpson was well in the middle of the SS300 battles, building on his strong top 10 qualifying times to then add a 9th and 5th across the first 2 races, finally finishing in 4th place for his final race, just missing the podium by 0.019 seconds.
Joining the ASBK SS300 debutantes for 2024, Nicholas Yfantidis kicked off his first race with a 20th place finish but fought through the competition to take 16th place in race 2, then edged even closer to the top 10 with a 13th place finish, just 0.203 seconds behind 12th.
